Sallie Krawcheck is one of the most powerful women on Wall Street and one of the biggest names in American finance. She has held leadership positions with Bank of America, Sanford C. Bernstein, and Citigroup, and served as CEO of Citi’s wealth management division. Today, she works as the CEO of Ellevest, a digital investment assistent for women, and gives financial advice in print and broadcast media.
EARLY LIFE
Sallie Krawcheck was born on November 28, 1964. She grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, where she attended the prestigious Porter-Gaud School. As a young woman, Krawcheck was a high achiever and a hard worker, and was named a South Carolina Presidential Scholar as a high school senior.
Education
Krawcheck received a Morehead Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she graduated with a degree in journalism. In 1992, she graduated Beta Gamma Sigma from Columbia Business School.
Rise to Success
After her graduation, Krawcheck began her career in finance as an equity analyst for Wall Street firms. Over the years, she rose to the top of research firm Sanford C. Bernstein, eventually becoming first their Director of Research and then CEO. Her business sense and reputation for honest advice made her sought-after on Wall Street, and Citigroup appointed her CEO of a new unit after working with her as a consultant.
Career
Since her appointment at Citigroup, for which Fortune Magazine named her 2003’s “Most Influential Person Under The Age Of 40,” Krawcheck has continued to work with the biggest companies in finance. After overseeing 13,000 brokers and analysts at Citigroup, Krawcheck was hired to oversee 16,000 employees and $2.3 trillion at Bank of America.Towards the end of 2014, Krawcheck chose to forge her own path as the co-founder and CEO of Ellevest. Ellevest is an online financial platform and consulting service for women. As a woman in a male-dominated field, Krawcheck has been vocal about the importance of closing the gender gap; she founded Ellevest to help women enter the investment market and achieve their financial and professional goals.
Krawcheck is also well-known for her many media appearances. She has appeared on CNBC, written posts for The Huffington Post and other online media outlets, and has almost a million followers on LinkedIn.
ADDITIONAL FACTS
• Krawcheck was a self-described “outcast” in middle school, but was named Homecoming Queen in her senior year.
