Sheryl Sandberg is an American business executive known for her role as COO of Facebook and as the founder of the NPO Leanin.org. In 2012 Sandberg was elected by Time magazine for the Time 100 list as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Before taking on the role at Facebook in 2008, Sandberg worked for Lawrence Summers, the United States Secretary of the Treasury as chief of staff. The business executive is also one of the board members of Facebook’s board of directors and has a reported net worth of over US$1 billion.
EARLY LIFE
Born to an ophthalmologist and a French teacher in Washington D.C., Sheryl Sandberg was the oldest of three children. When she was two years old, the Sandberg family moved to Miami.
EDUCATION
After completing her basic education at North Miami Beach High School, Sandberg enrolled at Harvard College where she graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1991. In 1995 she achieved an MBA with the highest distinction at Harvard Business School.
RISE TO SUCCESSES
Sandberg’s first position after graduating in 1995 was as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company. She then took on a role with Larry Summers who served under President Bill Clinton as United States Secretary of the Treasury. In later years Sandberg joined Google before she was appointed as COO of Facebook.
CAREER
After joining Facebook, Sandberg began making plans to make the company profitable. Until this time the company was more interested in functionality than making money. Facebook agreed to allow discreet advertising and by 2010 the company started turning a profit.
Sandberg is responsible for all business operations such as marketing, sales, communications, public policy and business development.
