EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION
Mrs. Rebecca Miano was born in Kenya in 1966. She grew up in a polygamous home made up of two wives and 14 children. She holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Laws in Comparative Law from the University of Australia. She also completed Strathmore University's Advanced Management Program in 2010.
EARLY CAREER
Mrs. Miano’s first job was at a Nairobi-based law firm. After leaving that firm, she moved to Australia, where she worked as an attorney at Slater and Gordon. In 1998, she returned to Kenya and began working for KenGen as senior legal officer. In 2008, she was promoted to company secretary as well as legal affairs director. Mrs. Miano served in those roles until 2017, when she was made managing director and CEO.
ACHIEVEMENTS AT KENGEN
Mrs. Miano's succeeded in becoming KenGen's managing director and chief executive officer despite there being 90 other applicants for the job. Mrs. Miano's entire career at KenGen has been characterized by her driving the corporate governance agenda and being a pillar of guidance and support to the board. Mrs. Miano defines success as “going beyond some expectations with excellence, not perfection but with excellence. Because excellence is where you do something consistently well. I have made a difference with excellence. And I think I have broken the boundaries.”
RECOGNITION
Mrs. Rebecca Miano was named the 2010 Company Secretary of the Year by the Institute of Public Secretaries of Kenya. Mrs. Miano was decorated with the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya that year as well.
ADDITIONAL FACTS
Mrs. Rebecca Miano is the first female chief executive at KenGen. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya.
